Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
